A Malaysia Company has successfully installed a ground-based carbon fiber tower Taman Tasik Prima, Malaysia. This marks the first carbon fiber-based tower built in Asia.
“edotco is always experimenting with materials and innovative solutions to address the challenges of the telecommunications infrastructure industry,” said CEO Suresh Sidhu. “Carbon fiber is ideal for rooftop deployment where load is a concern. We are pioneering the use of carbon fiber structures to provide a solution that addresses requirements and concerns of the telecommunications eco-system from MNOs (mobile network operators), governments, regulators, landlords, end-users and communities.”
The company cites a number of reasons for using carbon fiber. It is 70 percent lighter than conventional steel structures, reducing foundation requirements by half while providing high strength to weight ratio. Carbon fiber is also very rigid and has a tensile strength 10 times higher than steel, allowing load bearing with the tower able to better withstand harsher forces of nature, including turbulent wind. In addition to high durability, it is also highly corrosion-resistant, contributing towards lower maintenance costs over the lifespan of the structure. The company adds carbon fiber helped it reduced installation time by 40-50 percent.
“These features result in lower total cost of ownership (TCO) of 20%,” the company said. “As edotco gains more experience in the deployment of carbon fiber towers, customization requirements will lessen, bringing the company closer to its target of 40% in TCO reduction.”
The company’s next carbon fiber structure will be a rooftop in Bangladesh where it will provide a solution to building constraints.
